1940-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Class V pivoted hub doubling shows on FIVE CENTS and MO...LLO of MONTICELLO on this first documented doubled die reverse for the 1940 San Francisco Mint Jefferson Nickel, attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1940-S WDDR-001. Class V pivoted hub doubling occurs when the hub pivots around a fixed point during hubbing, producing a spread that radiates outward from the pivot center — this creates doubling that increases in magnitude with distance from the pivot point, which is why FIVE CENTS and portions of MONTICELLO show the effect while closer design elements may appear normal. Die markers include a die chip in the upper portion of 4 of the date on the obverse, a die scratch near the rim below ER of AMERICA, and a die gouge above E of E PLURIBUS UNUM on the reverse. The 1940-S Jefferson Nickel was struck in the series' standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, two years before the wartime silver alloy change. As the first DDR documented for the 1940-S date, WDDR-001 establishes the baseline entry for this mint-date combination in the doubled die reverse catalog, and its Class V mechanism makes it one of the more interesting doubling types found on early Jefferson Nickels.
