1936 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005
Error
Description
Light spread across IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY defines DDO-005 on the 1936 Washington Silver Quarter, a year when Philadelphia struck 41,300,000 quarters bearing John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington. Die markers tracked under UVC-0046 and DMR-007 reveal a three-stage die life: Stage A at Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B at Mid Die State where the obverse shows a die clash impression of the eagle's left wing, and Stage C reaching Late Die State (unconfirmed). The Stage B die clash in the eagle's wing area is a particularly useful secondary diagnostic, providing attributors with a confirmatory marker independent of the hub doubling itself. Washington Quarter DDOs from the pre-war silver era command heightened collector interest because the series was only four years old in 1936, still in its formative period when die production techniques were being adapted to the relatively new design. As the fifth cataloged DDO for the 1936 date, DDO-005 indicates that multiple obverse dies received imperfect hub impressions during that year's die manufacturing process. Cataloged by VarietyVista, the light spread classification means magnification is essential for confirming the doubling on the motto and LIBERTY lettering, particularly on circulated specimens where wear may obscure the secondary impression.
