Description

Among the earliest Washington quarter doubled dies, the 1936 WDDO-002 displays a close spread towards the center on the lower portion of the top of the 9 in the date. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under variety ID 1936 25¢ WDDO-002, this die pairing carries no known cross-references, making it a lesser-documented but legitimate doubled die for the series. Obverse die markers include several die scratches curving northeast from the upper right of the 6, a die scratch running southeast from the top of the 6, and additional scratches running west to east inside the lower B of LIBERTY. Several short die scratches run west from the upper left of the 3. On the reverse, a die scratch runs east-northeast from the lower E in STATES, and another curves north-northwest from the left leaf below the arrowheads up to the arrowheads themselves. A rough pitted area between the D in UNITED and the S in STATES further distinguishes this die state. Submitted by Joe Feld, this variety rewards careful examination of the date digits under moderate magnification.
