1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
Error
Description
The 1936 Washington Quarter WDDO-004 is cross-referenced as CONECA 3-O-II, with the Wexler attribution recorded as 1936 25¢ WDDO-004. The variety was submitted by Joe Feld. The hub doubling spreads toward the center of the die, producing doubling visible on the 36 of the date and on the bottom of the ribbon beneath Washington's queue. Higher-grade examples display the doubling more clearly, making this a condition-sensitive cherrypicking variety. The obverse die carries a diagnostic scratch running southeast across the upper nose just below the eye. Two parallel die scratches on the reverse run northwest from the upper arrow tips, and a die scratch extends west-northwest from the tail feathers below the right talon toward the arrow shafts — reverse markers that assist attribution when the obverse doubling is subtle. John Flanagan's Washington portrait debuted on the quarter in 1932; the 1936 Philadelphia issue was struck in 90% silver and produced in large numbers. WDDO-004 represents one of the more interesting hub-doubling varieties from the early Washington Quarter run.
