1936 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Documented by VarietyVista on the 1936 Washington Quarter, DDR-002 is a doubled die reverse variety produced when the working die received misaligned hubbing impressions during manufacture. VarietyVista assigns UVC-0049 and DMR-010 to this variety. Die stages are documented in three phases, all currently unconfirmed: Stage A is early die state, Stage B is mid-die state, and Stage C is late die state. Washington Quarters of 1936 are struck in 90% silver and bear John Flanagan's Washington portrait with the heraldic eagle reverse. As a first-decade issue of the series that began in 1932, the 1936 date carries added collector interest. Doubled die reverse varieties on silver Washington quarters are relatively scarce compared to Lincoln cent doubled dies, reflecting the smaller production volumes of the period. UVC-0049 and DMR-010 are the primary attribution anchors. Collectors should examine reverse design elements under magnification to identify the areas of doubling and use the die stage progression to narrow the die state of any given specimen before finalizing attribution.
