1936 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Second documented doubled die obverse for the 1936 Washington Quarter, this variety displays light spread on LIBERTY and the date. Cataloged under VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-0043 and DMR-004, the variety progresses through three documented die states. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, while Stage B in obverse/reverse middle die state represents the typical condition encountered. Stage C in late die state is distinguished by a light die crack running across Washington's forehead and into the hair, with the reverse also showing late die state characteristics. The 1936 Washington Quarter belongs to the early years of the series, which debuted in 1932 to commemorate the bicentennial of George Washington's birth. John Flanagan's portrait design would remain in continuous production for over six decades. Doubled die obverse varieties on early Washington Quarters are scarce compared to later dates, as both lower mintage and the passage of time have limited the surviving population. The progression from clean early die state through the developing forehead crack provides die state collecting opportunities within this single variety.
