Description

Originally discovered in 2012 as VAM-1AI, this 1925-P Peace Dollar was reassigned to VAM-1AI2 in 2013 following further study that distinguished it from related die states. The variety features die scratches to the left of the P mintmark position and scribbling die scratches above and to the right of the eagle's shoulder on the reverse, representing a later die state of clashed dies. Classification is II1 B2a with a rarity rating of I-2 R-5. The scribbling die scratches at the eagle's shoulder resulted from die maintenance after a clash event, where the Mint attempted to remove clash marks from the die surface but left distinctive scratched patterns in the process. These post-clash tool marks are diagnostically useful because they appear consistently on every coin struck from this die state. The reclassification from 1AI to 1AI2 illustrates how the VAM cataloging system evolves as researchers identify additional die states or related varieties that require finer distinctions within the numbering framework.
