Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1925 $1 WDDR-001, this is the premier doubled die reverse for the 1925 Peace dollar. As WDDR-001, it represents the most significant or first-discovered doubled die reverse variety for the date. The obverse die is notably also a doubled die, cross-listed in the Wexler files as 1925 $1 WDDO-001, showing close doubling on the designer's initials and on the 5 in the date, along with a light die crack running across the base of the bust. This dual-doubled-die status — both obverse and reverse displaying hub doubling from the same die pair — makes this a particularly prized variety. Reverse die markers include heavy NE/SW die scratches running through USA and EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM) and a heavy diagonal die gouge from the top right of the first U in PLURIBUS to the O in ONE. The 1925 Peace dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams at 38.1 mm. Philadelphia produced 10,198,000 Peace dollars in 1925, making it one of the higher-mintage dates in the series. Anthony de Francisci's Peace dollar design, with its radiate Liberty head obverse and eagle-on-rock reverse, was introduced in 1921 as a commemoration of peace following World War I. The combination of WDDO-001 on the obverse and WDDR-001 on the reverse in a single die marriage creates a variety that carries the premier doubled die designation on both sides, a rare occurrence in any denomination and one that generates strong demand from Peace dollar specialists.
