1925 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team and catalogued as 1925 $1 WDDO-001, this Peace Dollar obverse doubled die exhibits close doubling on the designer's initials and on the 5 in the date. A light die crack running across the base of the bust serves as the primary obverse die marker. This variety is paired with a notable reverse: the reverse die is itself a doubled die, separately catalogued as 1925 $1 WDDR-001, showing a significant spread on the olive branch and leaves, the eagle's talons, and the back feathers on the lower legs. Reverse markers include heavy northeast-southwest die scratches through USA and EPU of E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a heavy diagonal die gouge from the top right of the first U in PLURIBUS to the O in ONE. The 1925 Peace Dollar was designed by Anthony de Francisci in 90% silver. Note the reverse legend reads TRVST, a deliberate archaism. A coin struck from matched obverse and reverse doubled dies is a compelling find for Peace Dollar specialists, as both dies carry independently verifiable hub doubling characteristics.
