Description

Discovered in 2010, the 1925 Peace Dollar VAM-1AC features extensive die file lines on the obverse (die II 1) — horizontal file lines at the date area and vertical file lines on Liberty's head, face, and left field, paired with reverse die B1a. Cataloged with an I-2 interest level and R-6 rarity rating, this variety documents die maintenance work where a Mint employee filed the die surface to extend its useful life, likely to smooth out die cracks or other imperfections. The presence of both horizontal lines at the date and vertical lines on the portrait and field indicates the die was filed from multiple directions, suggesting a thorough resurfacing rather than a targeted repair. Die file lines transfer to struck coins as raised parallel marks that are unmistakable under magnification, and the combination of horizontal and vertical orientations on VAM-1AC makes it one of the more extensively filed Peace Dollar dies documented. The R-6 rarity suggests only 13 to 30 examples are known, consistent with a die nearing end-of-life.
