Description

Discovered in 2010 by BJV, the 1925-P VAM-1AB Peace Dollar documents a rusted or worn right reverse die — a condition where deterioration of the die surface, whether from oxidation during storage or accelerated wear during use, left physical evidence on the struck coins. The obverse is classified as II-1 with a fine die scratch at the top of Y in LIBERTY serving as the primary die marker. The reverse, designated B2a, shows raised dots and splotches mainly in the right and top left fields, the physical manifestation of pitting in the die face from rust or corrosion that transferred as raised features on the coin. With an interest level of I-3 and rarity of R-6, this variety is both genuinely scarce and of moderate collector interest. Die rusting was a recognized hazard in mint operations: dies stored in humid conditions without adequate protection could develop surface oxidation, and if those dies were subsequently placed into service, the rusted areas would produce distinctive raised marks on the struck coins. The 1925-P Peace Dollar had a mintage of approximately 10.2 million pieces at the Philadelphia Mint, and the relatively high production means that multiple die pairs were employed, each with its own history of storage and handling conditions. VAM-1AB captures evidence of mint workshop practices — specifically die storage conditions — preserved in silver, offering collectors a tangible connection to the industrial environment of 1920s coin production.
