Description

Designated a Top 50 Peace Dollar VAM, this 1925 Philadelphia Mint variety stands among the most collectible die varieties in the entire Peace Dollar series. Discovered by Ben Wengel in October 2008, VAM-1A2 is classified as 1A2 II1, B2a, with a rarity of I-2 R-6, and described as Line in Tiara, Die Break 5. The obverse displays a radial die crack on the left side of the digit 5 in the date that develops into a displaced field die break. This variety was originally known as VAM-1X for about a day and a half, until Leroy Van Allen was notified that the coin displayed the Top 50 Tiara Die Gouge, prompting its reclassification to VAM-1A2 to properly reflect the Top 50 attribution. The Top 50 designation highlights the most significant Peace Dollar varieties and commands strong collector demand. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the Peace Dollar's reverse features the word TRVST rather than TRUST, designer Anthony de Francisci's classical flourish. The combination of the Tiara die gouge, a hallmark Top 50 diagnostic, with the die break on the 5 gives VAM-1A2 two prominent visual features.
