PC-1c-1872-01 Pre-Cud
Error
Description
First documented pre-cud for the 1872 Indian Head Cent, this variety preserves the developing die rim crack that precedes a full cud — the stage where the fracture has formed but the broken piece has not yet separated from the die. Cross-referenced as 1872 Bold N with Snow numbers S4a through S4b and CONECA designations RPD-003 and MPD-001, this variety intersects with multiple classification systems that track Indian Head Cent die varieties. The Snow catalog (by Rick Snow) is the primary reference for Indian Head Cent die varieties, and the S4a/S4b designations indicate specific die states within that system. The CONECA cross-references to RPD-003 (Repunched Date) and MPD-001 (Misplaced Date) reveal that the die exhibiting this pre-cud also carried other variety features, making it a die of multiple interest. The 1872 Indian Head Cent had a mintage of 4,042,000 pieces at the Philadelphia Mint, a moderate production figure for the series. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins on March 11, 2024, the "Bold N" designation refers to a distinctive characteristic of the N in ONE or CENT on the reverse. Pre-cuds on Indian Head Cents from the 1870s are uncommon, and the convergence of pre-cud, repunched date, and misplaced date features on a single die makes this a particularly well-documented example of multiple die anomalies.
