CU-1c-1872-02R Cud

Description

Two documented reverse cuds from a date with only approximately 4.0 million coins struck is a noteworthy concentration, as each represents a different reverse die that fractured during the limited production run. CU-1c-1872-02R is the second reverse cud for the semi-key 1872 Indian Head Cent, the "R" suffix confirming the break on the reverse die. Where CU-1c-1872-01R documents one failure, this second variety proves that at least two separate reverse dies developed rim fractures during 1872 production at the Philadelphia Mint. The coin was struck in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc). A reverse cud forms when a portion of the reverse die rim fractures under cumulative striking stress and separates, leaving a void that fills with metal to produce a raised featureless mass. The two 1872 reverse cuds can be distinguished by comparing each cud's position and shape against published reference images.
