Description

This 1872 Indian Head cent exhibits a retained cud on the reverse from approximately 3:00 to 5:00 on the clock face. The cud is offset on the ribbon and arrow area, showing clear advancement beyond the pre-cud die crack stage. A retained cud occurs when a piece of the die has cracked and begun to separate but remains partially attached, creating a raised, slightly displaced area on the struck coin. This specimen captures the die in an intermediate state of deterioration — past the pre-cud stage but before the broken piece fully separates to create a complete cud break.
