1872 Indian Head Cent Shallow N FS-901

Description

This 1872 Indian Head cent is the Shallow N reverse variety, designated FS-901. The 1872 is the final year in which the Shallow N reverse hub was used, making it a key transitional variety. The Shallow N features a three-dimensionally shallow letter N in CENT that almost blends into the background field, along with straighter, T-shaped serifs on the letter E and larger notches in the lettering. The 1872 Shallow N is generally considered the scarcest of the three dates (1870-1872) on which this reverse type appears, and is recognized by both PCGS and NGC as a distinct collectible variety.
