Description

Lathe lines are visible on this 1864 Indian Head cent (Bronze No L variety). Lathe lines are concentric circular marks left on the die from the machining process used to prepare the die face. When a die is not properly finished after lathing, these marks transfer to struck coins as visible concentric rings or arcs across the coin's surface. In this case, the lines can be seen on Liberty's face. This variety is cataloged as FS-1401 and Snow-11. The 1864 Bronze No L variety was among the first bronze Indian Head cents struck after the mid-1864 composition change from copper-nickel to bronze. The "No L" designation indicates the absence of designer James Longacre's initial on the ribbon.
