Part of the Harriet Tubman three-coin program, this half dollar highlights Tubman's lesser-known military service. On June 2, 1863, she became the first woman to lead an armed assault during the Civil War in the Combahee River Raid in South Carolina. The obverse features harriet Tubman in the foreground with two Civil War-era boats in the background, referencing the Combahee River Raid, while the reverse displays Tubman holding a spyglass in front of a row of Civil War-era tents, depicting her role as scout and spy for the Union Army. Designed by Don Everhart and Renata Gordon (obverse), John P. McGraw (reverse). Struck in nickel clad copper-n, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Tubman half dollar reveals the military dimension of Tubman's remarkable life, showing her as a Union Army intelligence operative.
