About This Coin
The 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar is a United States commemorative half dollar. Part of a three-coin program celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty's dedication in 1886, this half dollar captures the immigrant experience that the Statue symbolizes. Surcharges raised over $83 million for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The obverse features the Statue of Liberty against the New York skyline with an immigrant ship arriving in the harbor and the sun rising in the east, while the reverse displays an immigrant family of four standing on an Ellis Island wharf overlooking New York City across New York Harbor, with the inscription 'A Nation of Immigrants'. Designed by Edgar Z. Steever IV (obverse) and Sherl J. Winter (reverse). Weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. As the entry-level denomination in the program, the Statue of Liberty half dollar introduced many collectors to modern commemoratives and remains widely available in high grades.
