Description

The 1986 (S) Proof Statue of Liberty Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar is a commemorative half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint. Total mintage reached 6.9 million. Part of a three-coin program celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty's dedication in 1886, this half dollar captures the immigrant experience that the Statue symbolizes. The obverse features the Statue of Liberty against the New York skyline with an immigrant ship arriving in the harbor and the sun rising in the east, while the reverse displays an immigrant family of four standing on an Ellis Island wharf overlooking New York City across New York Harbor, with the inscription 'A Nation of Immigrants'. Designed by Edgar Z. Steever/Sheryl J. Winter. Struck in copper-nickel, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9619. As the entry-level denomination in the program, the Statue of Liberty half dollar introduced many collectors to modern commemoratives and remains widely available in high grades.
