About This Coin
The 2022 Negro Leagues Baseball Commemorative Half Dollar is a United States commemorative half dollar. Part of the Negro Leagues Baseball three-coin program, this half dollar's bus imagery addresses the discrimination players faced while traveling. Negro League teams often traveled hundreds of miles between games, sleeping on their buses because segregated hotels refused them rooms. The obverse features a ballplayer at bat with a team bus below, referencing the buses that served as both transportation and shelter when hotels refused accommodation, while the reverse displays five Negro Leagues Baseball players standing together with bats and gloves. Designed by Chris Costello and John P. McGraw (obverse), Justin Kunz and Phebe Hemphill (reverse). Struck in nickel clad copper-n, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Negro Leagues half dollar's bus design poignantly illustrates both the joy of playing baseball and the hardships of Jim Crow segregation.
