Description

First documented doubled die obverse for the 2022 Denver Mint American Women Quarter, VDDO-001 exhibits medium spread in the southeast direction visible on the hair curls above George Washington's ear on the obverse. The VarietyVista catalog assigns preliminary die markers of UVC-???? and DMR-00?, indicating this variety awaits final UVC (Universal Variety Code) assignment — a common status for recently discovered varieties still being processed through the attribution pipeline. Three die stages are noted: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in Early Die State (EDS), Stage B in MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C in LDS (unconfirmed). The American Women Quarters program, launched in 2022 and running through 2025, features a new obverse portrait of Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser — a design originally proposed in 1931 but passed over in favor of John Flanagan's portrait that served for ninety years. The hair curls above the ear in Fraser's design present fine sculptural detail where even modest hub doubling becomes visible, and the southeast spread direction indicates the secondary hub impression was displaced both downward and to the right. As the inaugural VDDO for this new obverse design, it represents the first documented doubled die obverse in the American Women Quarters series from Denver.
