About This Coin
The 2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Half Dollar is a United States commemorative half dollar. Part of the Apollo 11 three-coin curved program, this half dollar shares the same groundbreaking designs as the dollar. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon while Michael Collins orbited above in the Command Module. The obverse features a concave design with 'Mercury,' 'Gemini,' and 'Apollo' program references and a lunar footprint, while the reverse displays a convex close-up of Buzz Aldrin's visor from the Moon landing photograph. Designed by Gary Cooper/Phebe Hemphill. Struck in copper-nickel, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Apollo 11 half dollar brings the stunning curved-coin technology and visor design to a more affordable denomination.
