2015 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

As the primary doubled die obverse for the 2015-P Jefferson Nickel, DDO-001 exhibits a strong spread to the northwest on Jefferson's left nostril — a facial feature where even minor hub displacement produces a clearly visible doubling effect due to the high relief of the portrait. Die markers include UVC-1822 and DMR-004. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The Jefferson Nickel series has been struck continuously since 1938, and Felix Schlag's original obverse portrait (modified slightly over the decades) provides consistent diagnostic areas — particularly the nose, eye, and jawline — where collectors can detect hub doubling. Strong spread on the nostril is among the more desirable doubled die presentations on Jefferson Nickels, as it is readily visible without high magnification and provides an unambiguous attribution point.
