2015 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Classified as Class VIII tilted hub doubling under the Wexler system, WDDR-005 on the 2015 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel exhibits doubling below the upper right portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII represents one of eight recognized mechanisms by which doubled dies are created — a slight angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during one hubbing impression, producing displacement that varies across the die face depending on distance from the tilt axis. Die markers on the obverse include a die chip in Jefferson's right eyebrow. The reverse carries a small die gouge below the crossbar on the right side of the second T of STATES and a small die gouge above the second L of MONTICELLO. These markers serve as fingerprints tying any coin to this specific working die pair. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, in continuous use since 1938, provides the architectural framework within which this tilted hub doubling occurs. The door frame area where the doubling concentrates contains fine parallel lines and geometric detail, making even modest displacement visible under examination at ten to fifteen times magnification.
