2015 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

Targeting the architectural centerpiece of Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, WDDR-006 of the 2015 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII (Tilted Hub) doubling below the upper door frame on the center door above the steps. Class VIII results from the hub tilting during hubbing, producing diagonal displacement along an angled axis — and Monticello's center doorway provides an ideal reference point for detecting this displacement. The doorframe's straight vertical and horizontal edges serve as natural rulers against which diagonal doubling becomes apparent as the secondary image diverges from the primary. Diagnostic die markers support attribution: a slanted die scratch runs above the right side of the roof, and a die gouge dot appears to the upper right of E of MONTICELLO — both confirming the working die independent of the doubling. The Jefferson Nickel's Monticello reverse has been in continuous production since 1938 (excepting 2004-2005 Westward Journey designs), and its detailed architectural rendering has made it a reliable canvas for detecting hub doubling across nearly nine decades.
