2014 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
ErrorDescription
Exhibiting Class VIII Tilted Hub doubling on the lower right side of Jefferson's nose, this 2014-P Jefferson Nickel WDDO-001 represents one of the more unusual doubling mechanisms found on modern coinage. Class VIII doubling occurs when the hub tilts slightly during the impression process, creating a pivoting displacement that differs from the rotational spread of Class I or the distorted spread of Class II varieties. The tilted hub mechanism produces doubling that is strongest at one edge of the design and diminishes toward the pivot point, and on this variety the lower right portion of Jefferson's nose captures the greatest displacement. Obverse die markers include a small die dot between the D of GOD and the W of WE, providing a reliable attribution point. The reverse carries its own diagnostic markers: a die gouge above the small right window and a die gouge below the C of MONTICELLO. Attributed by Evan Goldfarb and cross-referenced as Wexler 2014-P WDDO-001, this variety benefits from dual attribution. Class VIII varieties are less commonly encountered than Class I through Class V doubled dies, making them particularly interesting to collectors who study the mechanical origins of die doubling. The portrait doubling on Jefferson's nose gives this variety a visually distinctive character that sets it apart from inscription-only doubled dies.
