2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
ErrorDescription
Discovered by Stephen Young, the 2014 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel WDDR-002 exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling arises when the hub contacts the die at a slight angle, producing localized displacement. The obverse carries a die dot to the lower right of the E in WE. Reverse markers include a die chip in the upper S of CENTS, a die chip left of Felix Schlag's initials FS, a die crack through the upper portion of STAT in STATES, and a slanted die crack above the top right corner of the building. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2014-P WDDR-002. The four reverse markers spanning CENTS, designer initials, STATES, and the building itself provide an unusually rich diagnostic network for a single die. The center door area of Monticello continues to be a primary search zone for Class VIII doubled dies on Jefferson Nickels, consistent with the geometry of tilted hub contact on this architectural facade.
