2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Designated Wexler 2014-P WDDR-005, this Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel regular strike exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling — one of the less frequently encountered doubling classes, produced when the hub tilts relative to the die rather than shifting laterally or rotationally. The doubling manifests below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello, a localized effect consistent with how tilted hub doubling concentrates displacement in specific zones rather than spreading uniformly across the die. Reverse die markers include a die gouge below the left leg of the R of PLURIBUS and a short die gouge at the upper left corner of the small right window. Attributed by Stephen Young, WDDR-005 documents a Class VIII variety on the Monticello reverse that has served as the standard Jefferson Nickel design since 1938.
