Description

Among the most visually impressive doubled die obverse varieties for modern Jefferson nickels, the 2013-P WDDO-003 carries a "Best Of" designation in the Wexler Nickel Doubled Die Varieties reference — recognition for exceptional doubling quality and collectibility. Class VIII, Tilted Hub Doubling produces a spread where the secondary hub impression is tilted relative to the primary, fanning outward across multiple design elements. Very nice Class VIII doubling shows on LIBERTY, the date, the P mintmark, WE TRUST, Jefferson's right eye, and the hair around his right ear — a broad reach affecting both lettering and portrait. Attributed by Phil Hammond. Wexler Variety ID: 2013-P WDDO-003, "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties. Die markers confirm the working die: on the obverse, a die gouge sits to the lower left of the L in LIBERTY, and a die gouge appears in the hair to the upper left of Jefferson's right ear. On the reverse, a die gouge sits left of the F in FIVE, and a second die gouge appears above the small left window of Monticello. Jefferson nickels are struck in 75% copper / 25% nickel.
