2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Class VIII doubling shows along the underside of the top of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello on this 2013 Jefferson Nickel regular strike. Class VIII hub doubling results from a tilted or distorted hub creating directional displacement concentrated in specific design areas rather than affecting the entire die uniformly. The door frame detail on Felix Schlag's rendition of Jefferson's Virginia estate provides a precise diagnostic zone where the secondary impression is most visible. Reverse die markers aid in confirming the correct die pair: a small die gouge appears to the right of the top of the I in MONTICELLO, another small die gouge sits at the top right of the second A in AMERICA, and a die crack runs through the right base of the building to the rim. No obverse die markers were noted. The die crack extending from the building base to the rim indicates the reverse die had already developed structural stress, and the crack's progression through subsequent die stages would further alter the appearance of struck coins. Collectors should focus on the center door frame area where the Class VIII displacement manifests most clearly.
