2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
ErrorDescription
Displaying Class VIII tilted hub doubling, the 2013 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-002 shows doubled contours along the top of the left side of the door frame on the center door above the Monticello steps. Class VIII doubling occurs when the hub is tilted at an angle during its impression into the working die, creating displacement that varies in intensity across the die face — elements near the tilt axis show minimal doubling, while those farther away exhibit progressively stronger spread. On this variety, the doubling concentrates on the architectural detail of Monticello's main entrance doorway, one of the most precisely rendered features on the Jamie Franki revised reverse that has been in use since 2006 (replacing Felix Schlag's original Monticello rendition). The center door and steps of Jefferson's Virginia plantation home are focal points of the reverse design, making this an attribution area that collectors naturally examine. No obverse or reverse die markers have been noted, so the Class VIII doubling on the door frame is the sole identification feature. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams at the Philadelphia Mint. Cataloged by the Wexler Team. Examine the top of the left side of the center door frame above the Monticello steps for the tilted hub doubling that defines this variety.
