2013 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed by Tanner Scott and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2013-P WDDO-002, this Jefferson Nickel obverse exhibits Class VI distended hub doubling showing extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the date, and the P mintmark — the latter displaying slight notching at the bottom. Class VI doubling is produced when a hub that has expanded slightly through use or wear is impressed into a die, creating a distended or thickened appearance on design elements rather than the distinct separated spread seen in Class I rotated hub doubling. This mechanism produces a subtler effect that requires careful comparison to a normal specimen for confirmation. The reverse die marker is unremarkable with none noted, while the obverse carries a die scratch near the rim below the J of the designer's initials. The 2013-P nickel belongs to the Return to Monticello era that restored Felix Schlag's original Monticello reverse beginning in 2006. As the second documented doubled die obverse for this date, WDDO-002 demonstrates that even in the era of computer-guided hubbing equipment, dimensional variations in the hubbing process can still produce collectible die varieties — though typically at lower magnitudes than the dramatic doublings found on mid-twentieth-century coinage.
