2011P(JG)-100DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse
Error
Description
Found by Cal Goodard on a Position A strike of the 2011-P James Garfield Presidential Dollar, this trail die obverse is cataloged as 2011P(JG)-100DEO-001T. Trail dies occur when a partially hubbed die, not yet intended for production, is accidentally placed into a coining press, leaving faint or incomplete design elements on struck coins. At Stage B mid die state, a small die crack extends from the left brow into the field and another emerges from the wave of hair under the M of JAMES into the field. The obverse die also exhibits dimples beneath the letters of JAMES GARFIELD, where the incomplete hubbing left shallow impressions rather than fully formed characters. The reverse shows mid die state characteristics with no additional markers noted. Position A Presidential dollars carry the edge lettering oriented so that the date reads upright when the obverse faces the viewer, distinguishing them from Position B strikes where the relationship is inverted. This Position A attribution is essential for accurate catalog placement.
