2008P(JM)-100DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Documented on the Position A edge lettering orientation of the 2008 Philadelphia Mint James Monroe Presidential Dollar, this first trail die obverse shows the characteristic design extension caused by progressive die wear rather than hub doubling error. Presidential Dollars (2007-2016) feature edge-incused lettering including the date, mint mark, and motto, with Position A denoting the orientation where edge text reads upright with the obverse facing up — as distinct from Position B, where the text reads upright with the reverse facing up. Trail die obverses on Presidential Dollars are less commonly documented than trail die reverses, making the DEO (Die Error Obverse) classification noteworthy. At Stage A die state, the obverse exhibits a small die dot on Monroe's forehead in early die state, while no reverse markers were noted, also in early die state. James Monroe, fifth President, served 1817-1825 and is depicted on this coin in the Presidential Dollar series mandate to honor each president in order of service. Attributed by Trail Dies, this variety is identified by the JM parenthetical designating James Monroe within the Presidential Dollar catalog system.
