Description

Sharing the same obverse trail die as the Position A version, this listing documents the identical variety on a 2008 Philadelphia Mint James Monroe Presidential Dollar with Position B edge lettering — where the incused edge text reads upright when the reverse faces up, the opposite orientation from Position A. Because trail die characteristics originate on the obverse die itself, the trailing is identical regardless of which edge lettering position the finished coin receives; the distinction matters for collectors who track edge orientations as a separate variable. At Stage A die state, the obverse carries a small die dot on Monroe's forehead in early die state, with no reverse markers noted. Presidential Dollars received edge lettering in a separate operation after striking, and the two orientations result from which direction the coin enters the edge-lettering machine. The same obverse die could produce coins with either position, meaning the trail die variety exists across both orientations. James Monroe, fifth President serving 1817-1825, appears on this coin within the series honoring each president chronologically.
