2011(JG)-100DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse
Error
Description
Directional trail lines from the letters of JAMES GARFIELD at 315 degrees offset, with the reverse also carrying trails listed as 2011(JG)-100DER-001T. Found by Cal Goodard, this Trail Dies-cataloged Presidential Dollar (Position A) features both obverse and reverse trail die effects, documenting a comprehensive die contact event affecting both faces. Die markers at Stage B: obverse at MDS with a small die crack from the left brow into the field, another small die crack from the wave of hair under M of JAMES into the field, and dimples from the bottom of JAMES GARFIELD letters; reverse at MDS with none noted. The dimple phenomenon below the lettering represents a distinctive surface texture caused by displaced metal during the trail die contact event. Struck in manganese brass clad at 8.1 grams and 26.5 mm at the Philadelphia Mint, honoring the 20th President.
