Description

Discovered by Steven Bernatowics, this trail die obverse variety on the 2009-P DC Quarter presents compelling evidence of die-to-die contact during the minting process. Trail die varieties occur when an obverse and reverse die make contact without a planchet between them, transferring a faint mirror-image impression of one die's design onto the opposing die face. The documented Stage B specimen shows the obverse in mid-die state with a die break on the base of Washington's bust, while the reverse mid-die state displays no notable markers. The DC Quarter, featuring jazz legend Duke Ellington at a piano alongside the District of Columbia's motto "Justice for All," was part of the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories program that extended the popular quarter series beyond the original fifty states into the nation's territories and federal district.
