2009 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-007, this doubled die reverse on the 2009 Philadelphia Mint District of Columbia Quarter shows doubling on the left side of the E in ELLINGTON — a detail drawn from the Duke Ellington reverse design honoring the legendary jazz musician and Washington, D.C. native. The D.C. Quarter was part of the 2009 DC and US Territories program that extended the popular state quarter concept to six additional jurisdictions. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge appearing as a dot right of the N of IN and another small die gouge dot right of the top of the ribbon in the queue of Washington's hair. On the reverse, a short vertical die scratch sits left of the top of the C in COLUMBIA, a second die scratch appears near the rim above the C in COLUMBIA, and small die gouges are found right of the upper R in FOR. The Duke Ellington design by Don Everhart depicts the pianist and composer seated at a piano beside a music stand, with lettering in the surrounding field.
