2009 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010

Description

Very slight doubling appears on the left side of the E in ELLINGTON on this 2009-P DC Quarter, one of the six District of Columbia and U.S. Territories quarters issued that year as a bridge between the State Quarters and America the Beautiful programs. The DC reverse features Duke Ellington seated at a piano, and the doubling on his surname — while subtle — is detectable under magnification where the left edge of the E shows a secondary image. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2009-P 25c DC WDDR-010, the tenth DDR for this design reflects the depth of examination these transitional-program quarters received. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge dot below the left side of the I in IN and another small die gouge dot above the top left O in GOD. On the reverse, a small die gouge touches the upper right U in JUSTICE. The DC Quarter honored the District of Columbia with Ellington's portrait, a tribute to one of America's greatest composers and bandleaders who was born in Washington in 1899. The 2009 quarter program represented the final year of unique state and territory designs before the five-year America the Beautiful series began in 2010, making varieties from these six 2009 issues historically significant as the concluding chapter of the original fifty-state commemorative quarter concept.
