2009P(DC)-25DEO-002T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Designated 2009P(DC)-25DEO-002T in the Trail Dies reference system, this variety was discovered by Steven Bernatowicz on the 2009-P District of Columbia Quarter, which features a portrait of jazz legend Duke Ellington seated at a grand piano. A trail die forms when design elements from a previous die impression are partially transferred onto a subsequent die, leaving ghosted or doubled imagery that is diagnostic of the die state. Stage A die markers on the obverse show Early Die State with no significant markers noted. The reverse, also in Early Die State at Stage A, carries a die gouge between the M and B of COLUMBIA and two die dents to the right of the piano. The 2009 DC Quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad composition at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the six-coin District of Columbia and U.S. Territories series, honoring Washington, D.C. • Stage "A", obverse is EDS – none noted.
• Reverse is EDS – a die gouge is seen between the MB of COLUMBIA. Two die dents are seen to the right of the piano. Another small die gouge is seen above the T of JUSTICE.
