About This Coin

The 2008 Bald Eagle Commemorative Half Dollar is a United States commemorative half dollar. Part of the Bald Eagle Recovery three-coin program, this half dollar focuses on the next generation of eagles. The reverse features Challenger, a famous non-releasable bald eagle that has appeared at sporting events and educational programs across the country. The obverse features two baby eaglets sitting in their nest along with an unhatched egg, nestled in a tree, while the reverse displays the bald eagle 'Challenger' in profile view, superimposed over an American flag. Designed by Susan Gamble and Joseph Menna/Donna Weaver and Charles Vickers. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Bald Eagle half dollar's nest-with-eaglets design symbolizes the reproductive success that saved the species from extinction.
