Description
The 2008 (S) Bald Eagle Commemorative Half Dollar is a commemorative half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 120,180 examples. Part of the Bald Eagle Recovery three-coin program, this half dollar focuses on the next generation of eagles. The obverse features two baby eaglets sitting in their nest along with an unhatched egg, nestled in a tree, while the reverse displays the bald eagle 'Challenger' in profile view, superimposed over an American flag. Designed by Susan Gamble and Joseph Menna/Donna Weaver and Charles Vickers. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #394415. The Bald Eagle half dollar's nest-with-eaglets design symbolizes the reproductive success that saved the species from extinction.
