2005 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

Found on the 2005 Philadelphia Satin Finish Jefferson Nickel bearing the Westward Journey Bison reverse, this WDDO-013 exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling with a very close spread on GOD WE TRUST. Class VIII doubling occurs when the hub is tilted at an angle relative to the die during hubbing, producing a rotational spread that differs from the lateral or vertical shifts of other doubling classes. The Satin Finish coins were produced exclusively for annual uncirculated mint sets from 2005 to 2010, featuring a distinctive matte-like surface created by a specialized burnishing process — making doubled die varieties on Satin Finish strikes scarcer in the marketplace than their business strike counterparts. The 2005 Bison reverse was part of the Westward Journey Nickel Series commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition, with the American bison design replacing the traditional Monticello reverse for that year.
