2005 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006
ErrorDescription
Recognized by Kenneth Russell on the 2005-P Satin Finish Jefferson Nickel (Bison design), WDDO-006 is classified as Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling with a very close spread visible on GOD and RUS of TRUST. Tilted Hub Doubling occurs when the hub enters the die at a slight angular misalignment during one of the multiple impressions needed to fully sink the design. A small die dot below TR of TRUST on the obverse and a small die dot below and between the second S of STATES and the O of OF on the reverse provide reliable attribution markers. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2005 P WDDO-006 Satin Finish Bison, this variety appears on the special Satin Finish strikes produced exclusively for 2005-2010 Uncirculated Mint Sets. The Bison reverse, part of the Westward Journey Nickel Series commemorating Lewis and Clark, was the first redesigned Jefferson Nickel reverse since 1938. Satin Finish coins feature a distinctive matte-like texture from specially prepared dies, and varieties on these strikes are actively pursued by Jefferson specialists.
