2005 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010

Description

Belonging to the Westward Journey series that reimagined the Jefferson Nickel in 2004 and 2005, WDDO-010 appears on the 2005 Philadelphia Satin Finish Bison reverse variety — one of two special reverse designs issued that year. This Class VIII doubled die obverse results from Tilted Hub Doubling, where the hub contacted the die at a slight angle during sinking, producing a very close spread on GOD and TRUST. Class VIII doubling characteristically shows uneven displacement across the die face, with spread diminishing toward the pivot axis. Satin Finish coins were exclusive to 2005-2010 Mint uncirculated sets, produced by burnishing blanks and striking with laser-textured dies for a distinctive matte luster. Obverse die markers include two small parallel die gouges in Jefferson's hair near the rim at approximately 9:00, while the reverse carries a die gouge below the left upright of the M in AMERICA. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2005 P WDDO-010 Satin Finish Bison. The Bison reverse, designed by Jamie Franki, appeared only in 2005 before Monticello returned in modified form in 2006.
