2000P(SAC)-100DER-001T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Found by Michael Taylor, this Trail Dies-cataloged Sacagawea Dollar from the Philadelphia Mint represents a trail die variety on one of the U.S. Mint's manganese brass-clad coins. Light trail lines are seen from the top of the E of the motto, on some stars, and on the AR of DOLLAR at an offset direction of 030 degrees. Die markers at Stage B: obverse at MDS with very minor die gouges under the Y of LIBERTY; reverse at MDS with a small die gouge next to the M of AMERICA. Trail die effects arise from partial contact between die faces during press operation, transferring faint design lines. The Sacagawea Dollar, introduced in 2000 with Glenna Goodacre's obverse and Thomas D. Rogers' eagle reverse, was struck in manganese brass clad at 8.1 grams and 26.5 mm. Trail die varieties on dollar coins are less commonly cataloged than on cents due to lower production volumes.
