A pre-cud represents the critical intermediate phase in die failure progression: the rim has developed a visible crack that will eventually propagate into a full cud when the fractured section separates, but at this stage, the crack is present without complete separation. The "R" suffix confirms the crack appeared on the reverse die bearing Thomas D. Rogers' soaring eagle design, while the "02" sequence number indicates this was the second reverse pre-cud documented for the 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar.
