Description

Discovered by Jimmy Ehrhart, the 1999P-1DER-057T is a trail die reverse variety found on Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cents. Trail dies result from vestiges of a previous hub impression remaining on the working die surface. Documented at Stage C with the obverse at late die state, no significant obverse markers have been noted at this stage. The reverse, also at LDS, carries small die gouges around the RIC of AMERICA and additional small die gouges around the T of CENT. The clustering of reverse gouges in two distinct zones, around AMERICA and CENT, creates a dual-area diagnostic pattern that aids attribution even on well-circulated examples. The late die state on both sides indicates this die pair saw extensive production use, and collectors should examine these gouge clusters under magnification to distinguish them from general surface wear characteristic of advanced die deterioration.

Die Markers

  • Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – none noted.
  • Reverse is LDS – small die gouges are seen around the RIC of AMERICA.
  • Small die gouges are seen around the T of CENT.
