About This Coin

The 1998 Black Revolutionary War Patriots Commemorative Dollar is a United States commemorative dollar. Authorized to raise funds for the Black Revolutionary War Patriots Memorial in Washington, D.C. An estimated 5,000 African Americans served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, fighting for a freedom many of them did not personally enjoy. Crispus Attucks, a man of African and Wampanoag descent, is honored as the first casualty of the Revolution. The obverse features a portrait of Crispus Attucks, considered the first person killed in the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770, while the reverse displays a detail from the proposed Black Revolutionary War Patriots Memorial. Designed by John M. Mercanti/Ed Dwight. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Black Patriots dollar addresses a historically underrecognized chapter of the American Revolution and is popular among collectors interested in African American and military history.
